Samakka & Sarakka Jatara

Asia’s biggest tribal fair which started on wednesday entered its third day of festivities. Telangana government has declared Samakka-Saralamma Jatara as state festival.Government is spending approximately 90 crores for the elaborate arrangements for the festival. Over a crore pilgrims are estimated to visit the Jatara by the end of saturday the last day of the festival.
It is believed that after Kumbha Mela, the Medaram jatara attracts the largest number of devotees in the country. Devotees attend in drove from far and wide. Being a tribal festival many tribal devotees from different states of India (Andra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and parts of Jharkhand) reach to the festive place to celebrate the Jatara.
But the festival is loosing its sheen because now it has become a place of picnic and a place to visit. With majority of people who are attending do not know anything about the tribal customs and also with hi-tech interventions into the arrangements the tribals are being forced to take back stage.
And its no strange that the business community is cashing on the large group of devotees who are visiting the Jatara from far of places and no wonder some illicit activities and sub standard goods sale for the filling up their pockets. With small business people to those into the arranfements of the festival are giving little importance to the dense forest stretch which is being destroyed at large expanse unnecessarily.
But amidst all this the devotion and dedication towards the deities of the devotees is unparalleled. Jatara which is celebrated every two years is a blessing to all those who worship the deities with full trust and devotion.
